Goulburn Historic Waterworks - Goulburn Water Supply from 1886 to 1977

The Waterworks Pumphouse houses the original and operational 1883 Appleby Brothers Steam Beam Engine which is the only one of its kind left in the world. It is representative of the final stages in the refinement of Beam Engine design, having been built at the very end of era.

Our secondary stationary steam engine, The Hick, Hargreaves & Co., horizontal engine, while not original to the site has been at the Waterworks since 1970 where is was restored to working order. We consider it one of the family.

The end of World War I heralded a new era of the Waterworks with the introduction of new electric driven pumps (not operational) in 1918 - one of the first for a NSW Waterworks.

The Waterworks grounds are no less impressive, situated on the banks of the picturesque Wollondilly River. This area offers a place to relax where one can have a picnic or BBQ (fire bans permitting) while the kids enjoy the playground. Refreshments can also be purchased on steaming days.

The engines will be in action on Sunday only.
